The real question is not "where to buy" - it is "what to check before you pay." Once you know what to look for, online versus in-store becomes a detail. Here is the list we would hand a friend.
Canada's lab-grown diamond market has boomed, and so has the number of sellers. Some are excellent. Others lean on the fact that most people buy a ring once in their life. The difference shows up in a few simple checks.
What actually matters
Insist on this
- Independent documentation appropriate to the piece: individual IGI certificates for diamonds over 0.50 carat, or jewellery-level documentation where smaller accent diamonds are grouped.
- Real photos or video of the stone, not a stock image.
- 14K gold stated clearly, never "plated."
- A clear return policy and a real person to reach.
Red flags
- A price too good to be true, with no certificate.
- Vague specs (no colour, clarity, cut).
- No returns, no address, no name.
- "Gold" with no karat - often plated.
Online or a local jeweller
Both work. A local jeweller lets you see and try on; you pay for the space and the stock. Buying online gives more choice and better prices - as long as the seller provides certificates, real photos, and returns. What matters is not the channel. It is the transparency.
A good seller gives you everything you need to decide on your own. A bad one pressures you to decide fast.
Why Canada comes first, and the US is included
