It is the part you never see and think about least - until the day a stud goes missing. Choosing the back, push or screw, mostly decides one thing: peace of mind.

How each one works

The push-back (or friction back) simply slides onto the post and holds by pressure. Quick to put on, convenient day to day, but it can loosen over time. The screw-back threads onto a grooved post: slower to handle, but nearly impossible to lose by accident.

For a pair you never take off, the screw-back is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

What we fit, and what it costs

Every Carat Theory stud is fitted with a screw back - not an option, not an upcharge. The post is threaded and noticeably thicker than a smooth one, and the nut screws down rather than gripping by friction. That construction takes roughly 0.3 to 0.4 grams more gold per pair.

That half-gram is why the category has not made it the default. Across a full catalogue it is a real cost line, and it shows up in no product photograph. We took the view that a pair you wear every day should not depend on friction to stay on. To check what you are buying elsewhere, the product page has to state the backing type; if it does not, ask.

Our advice

For diamond studs worn every day, and especially for a pair you care about, choose the screw-back. The few extra seconds each morning are well worth the certainty of finding both stones at night. Keep push-backs for small fashion pieces you swap often.

A tip

If your current studs have a push-back that no longer holds, a jeweller can often replace the backs - or add silicone discs that improve grip without changing the post.

How to tell which back you have

Look at the post behind the ear: if it is smooth, it is a push-back (the back slides on and grips by friction). If it has a threaded groove, like a tiny screw, it is a screw-back (the back twists on). You can feel the difference instantly.

Does a screw back use more gold?

Yes: roughly 0.3 to 0.4 grams more per pair on our studs. The threaded post is thicker than a smooth one and the nut is more substantial. It is part of why push backs remain the category default.

Is the screw-back really more secure?

Yes. Because it has to be unscrewed, it cannot open on its own by catching on clothing or hair.

Can a push-back be converted to a screw-back?

Not directly: the post is different. But a jeweller can replace the post and back on most studs.

What about silicone backs?

They clearly improve a push-back's hold and are a good stopgap, but screw-backs remain the most secure long term.

Why do my earrings keep falling out?

Usually the push-back has loosened with wear. A fresh back, a silicone disc, or switching to a screw-back fixes it.

Are screw-backs good for children?

Yes - they are the most recommended for children and precious stones, because they will not open by accident.
